Weekly Task
Spellings: List - ow
Practice 2 each day : owl, cow, how, now, crown, brown, howl, growl. You will find a nice video with these words in it on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ph6nnHrVwY
The focus this week is on tens and units. Watch the videos and try it out. There is also a problem to solve every day. Just get some paper and a pencil to work them out. Have fun!!

Monday

10 minutes DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read) – any book of your choice

Use rainbow writing to practice these words on a blank page or in a copybook. Rainbow writing is a fun way to use repetition to help practice spelling words. It's a simple process where you use multiple colours of pencil, marker or crayon to create a fun rainbow effect when you write. See an example here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAVniLUkI4c

Parents/ Guardians: choose one of the 'ow' words and put it into a simple sentence. Call out (dictate) this sentence and have your child write the sentence down as accurately as possible. Look over the sentence together and point out 1 thing they did really well and 1 thing they could improve on next time e.g. spelling, using capital letters, full stops, spacing etc.
-          Problem of the day: It is half past 9 in the morning. RTE home/school hub will start at 11 o’clock. How long do I have to wait until it starts?

-          Tens and Units work: Watch the video and try out some tens and units work.

Tuesday
Be read to for 10 minutes. Parent/ Guardian reads aloud and child listens
Draw/ write about your favourite part of the story
OR draw/write about one of the characters from the story
Talk about your work. Why did you choose that part / character?
-          Problem of the day: I had 50c when I went to the shop. I bought crisps for 12c and a lollipop for 8c. How much change did I get back?

-          Tens and Units work: Some more tens and units work today, swapping ten units for a ten! A new video will be posted tomorrow!

Wednesday
10 minutes DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read) – any book of your choice
Verbs - Verbs are action / 'doing' words. Can you find 3 verbs in the book you chose to read today? Some examples of common verbs are: run, sing, sleep, smile, skip, read, eat.
Try out this online verb word search https://www.twinkl.ie/go/resource/verbs-interactive-word-search-tg-244-newlink
Sign up to Twinkl.co.uk for FREE to access this link. Use code IRLTWINKLHELPS

-          Problem of the day: Which room in your house is the biggest? Walk around the edge of your bedroom, your kitchen and your sitting room. Count the number of steps you took in each room carefully to find out which room is the biggest and which room is the smallest.
Room
Number of steps
My bedroom

The kitchen

The sitting room

-          Tens and Units work: Watch the new tens and units video and have a go. This video shows how to do RENAMING, where we cross out the number that is wrong and write it the proper way.

Thursday
Listen to the story 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff' on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QzT1sq6kCY
Retell the story in your own words – can you summarise the story?
Draw / write about your favourite part
OR make a list of the verbs (action/doing words) from the story

-          Problem of the day: How many legs are there on 4 dogs? (Remember if you draw a picture to help you when doing a maths problem, the picture doesn’t have to be perfect or even good – in maths we can draw a rough picture or a diagram – we only use it to help us find the answer).

-          Tens and Units work: Try some more tens and units. Remember, when you swap ten units for a ten and then write your number the proper way you are doing RENAMING.

Friday
Read Aloud – child to choose any book and read a small section aloud for someone at home. Parents/ Guardians, it is really important to actively listen and encourage all efforts and attempts made. All reading at home should be an enjoyable, shared experience.
Practice the 'ow' words from earlier in the week. Here are some ideas you can use to practice the words, choose 1 if you like:
- Use chalk to write them on the ground outside
- Paint the words on paper
- Make the words using play-doh
- Write the words on paper, cut them up and reassemble them
- Draw pictures to represent the words
- Or simply write the words on paper

-          Problem of the day: Look at a calendar if you have one hanging on a wall or maybe on your mam or dad’s phone. What day of week will your next birthday land on?

-          Tens and Units work: Same as yesterday. Try your best. We will have a new video to show you on Monday.
