Suggested work for 11th - 15th May

Hi boys and girls. We hope you had a lovely weekend and enjoyed the sunshine. Here are the work suggestions for this week.
Ms Gallagher has the next video for us to watch for our renaming.

There is a clip from Bua na Cainte (our class Irish programme) you can listen to and a translation. We are looking at birthdays this week.

Try to get some English and Maths work done and then choose one more activity from the optional menu. Also remember to get an active break in too. Most of all enjoy your family time and don't forget to help with the chores.

Lots of good reading on https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/

Week –11th – 15th  May 2020  (1st Class)

Literacy
Numeracy
Weekly
Task
-          Spellings: List – 'or' spellings for the week: horn, born, corn, short, fork, storm, north, torn. You will find a nice video with these words in it on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TKWxjU0UgQ

The focus again this week is on ADDITION using tens and units. The video shows addition without using resources to help, just bare number tasks.
There is also a problem to solve every day. Try your best!

Monday

-          10 minutes DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read) – any book of your choice
-          Spellings -
-          Use rainbow writing to practice these words on a blank page or in a copybook. Rainbow writing is a fun way to use repetition to help practice spelling words. It's a simple process where you use multiple colors of pencil, marker or crayon to create a fun rainbow effect when you write. Simply write the word once and then trace in as many different colours as you can!
-          Parents/ Guardians: choose two of the 'or' words and put them into simple sentences. Call out (dictate) these sentences and have your child write the sentences down as accurately as possible. Look over the sentence together and point out 1 thing they did really well and 1 thing they could improve on next time e.g.spelling, using capital letters, full stops, spacing etc.

-          Problem of the day:
How many legs do 3 zebras and 1 monkey have altogether? (Draw a simple picture if you need to)

Tens and Units work:
Watch the video for this week and try to do some adding up. This week we are going to try our best to do sums without using little tens and units but if you need to use them to help you that’s fine. Copy this page onto a page or into a sums copy if you have one.

Tuesday
-          Tricky Words for this week are: once, upon & always
-          Be read to for 10 minutes. Parent/ Guardian reads aloud and child listens
-          Work together to try find the Tricky Words in the story
-          Read, cover, write, say the 3 Tricky Words for this week
-          Put the 3 words into sentences
-          Problem of the day:
Megan and her two brothers are going to the cinema with their auntie. The tickets cost €4 for each child and €8 for adults. How much will the tickets cost altogether?

Tens and Units work:
Copy this page onto a page and try these adding up sums. Watch the videos again if you need any help!

Wednesday
10 minutes DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read) – any book of your choice
The grammar focus for this week is speech marks. Speech marks show the exact words of a speaker, for example: Good morning Mum!said Sam.
Watch this video on Youtube which helps us to understand speech marks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFLdsh47Nbc
Complete the sentences below by adding speech marks where needed:

1. A cheetah is the fastest animal, explained Max. It can run 75 miles per hour!
2. I scratched my knee when I fell, cried Jordan.
3. It's upstairs, said Mum, beside the bookshelf.
4. Hurry up, shouted Ben
5. That dinner was delicous Dad, said Ella.

-
-          Problem of the day:

Here is a calendar for June 2020. Answer the questions about the calendar. You can write or just say your answers!
        1.   What date is the first Sunday in June?
        2.   How many Thursdays will there be in June?
        3.   How many Tuesdays will there be in June?
4.What day of week will July 1st be?

-          Tens and Units work:
Today try this word problem by doing a sum. Remember to draw your sum like this to work it out:

t    u
____    There were 38 boys and 39 girls in GO KIDS GO. How many children were there altogether?

Thursday
10 minutes DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read) – any book of your choice
Give a quick summary of your DEAR time to an adult at home (Remember a summary is like a recap of what you read – tell them what happened in the story!)
        Handwriting practice: N M U J
Use pencils, markers, chalks outside, paints etc. to practice your capital letter formations
        Remember!
- J Start at the top and head down to the end, but at the bottom turn left and make a bend. A bit like an umbrella handle, hold on tight, pen off, add a line across the top – yes that's right!
- M A straight line down to start with again, then from the top draw a V with your pen. From the point where your V ends just take a mo, move your pen straight down to the bottom nice and slow.
- N Start at the top and go straight down, go back to the top and do a line to the right, one more line back to the top, practice again and again until you need to stop!
- U Uppercase 'U' is like the lowercase one. Start at the top, loop down and up. This is fun!

-          Problem of the day:

I have 2 cartons of milk. Each carton holds 1litre. My measuring jug only holds half a litre. How many measuring jugs would it take to hold all of my milk?

-          Tens and Units work:
Do a sum to work out this word problem:
There were 46 people sitting upstairs on a bus and 17 people downstairs. How many people were on the bus altogether?

Friday
Read Aloud – child to choose any book and read a small section aloud for someone at home. Parents/ Guardians, it is really important to activey listen and encourage all efforts and attempts made. All reading at home should be an enjoyable, shared experience.
Revise the 'or' words from earlier in the week. Can you think of any other words which have the 'or' sound? Make your own list of 'or' words
-          Problem of the day:

This is a bar graph showing the favourite fruits in First Class. Answer these questions about the graph.
1.      Which fruit is the most popular?
2.      Which fruit is the least popular?
3.      How many children like apples, bananas and strawberries altogether?
4.      Which fruit is the second most popular?
5.      How many children are there in the class altogether?
